Return to Life

I hope all of you had a great holiday weekend.  It was a busy one for me with work, photos and enjoying the company of friends. Yesterday we went over to “Happy Hour” with some pals and I took the opportunity to photograph their lovely garden.  It was a warm, sunny afternoon filled with beer, cheese and salmon.  Yummy!  But alas, today it is back to the work week and normal life.  What were your Memorial Day festivities?  I would love to know.

Digital Pinhole Experiment

Today I dusted off my tripod and experimented with my Digital Pinhole Body Cap which is another gem from Photojojo. I wanted this gadget because I like the subtle look and feel of a pinhole image.  There are many ways to build a pinhole camera and I have made a few film cameras myself.  However, I like the idea of a digital pinhole for the immediate effect.  The concept is relatively simple. You take you pinhole body cap, fit it on your DSLR and set it to manual.  A very long shutter speed is required for indoor shots so you will need a tripod or some way to steady your camera.  I used a shutter speed of 30 seconds to capture this image.  The outdoor shot I took was around a 6 second exposure.  After that you just press the shutter and wait.  I decided to shoot these in Black & White because I think it suits the medium better.  I will be taking more of these this week!

Bokeh Master!

Over the holiday I played around with one of my Xmas presents,  the Bokeh Kit from Photojojo.  It came with 21 different shapes to add these neat effects to your photos.  As you know, if you read this blog regularly, I LOVE bokeh and shallow depth of field. I had made my own contraption for this and it worked relatively well.  However,  these shapes are more durable than punched construction paper. Tomorrow I will be experimenting with another present the digital pinhole body cap.

Snowflake Light

We went off to St. Louis to celebrate the holidays.  The trip was quite snowy on the way there but we made it safely.  I took this photo from inside the house looking out at this giant tree.  I took several versions, however, I like the way the snowflake light is reflecting off the window and how the tree appears to be in silhouette from the evening light. I hope that you all had a happy holiday and didn’t get lumps of coal in your stockings 🙂

Sticks & Streams

I was out running errands this morning and the sun made a very brief appearance so I thought I would stop by the Baker Wetlands and snap a few shots.  The creek was iced over and there were some spots of color along the banks that I wanted to bring out. In order to create a mystical feel  I opened up my aperture and focused on the tree branches in the foreground.  I then ran an action from the Florabella Collection and added a texture to complete the look.  It feels painterly and soft and I like the orange color enhanced on the bank.  You can see more images on my flickr page and I will be adding some of these photos to my etsy shop later today.

A Whisper

I had an idea to take a photo using my ring light on my Nikon D80.  I liked the way the light was hitting these little Baby’s Breath and the ring light added just the right amount of light to take out the yellow cast of my kitchen lights.  I will definitely utilize this gadget again.  I added a grungy bokeh texture in Photoshop to add some weight to the image.  Since I shot my last roll of film I have been looking for ways to make my digital images feel more like film.  I received 4 rolls of film today, 2 black & white and 2 color, so I am excited to get out and do some shooting.  Now if only the weather would cooperate.  I will be listing this photo along with  some new images this afternoon in my etsy shop.

Window Light

While I was at the grocery store today I was looking for some flowers to photograph.  The selection was sparse so I decided on these pink carnations.  At least I think that’s what they are.  I put them in a vase and set them in front of my kitchen window.  Of the 15 or so photos I took this was my favorite.  I like the way the light is lightly kissing the top of the flowers.  I ran the Ruby Action from Ms. Florabella along with the Mimosa texture.  The effect is subtle but enhances the colors of the image.

Thursday Photo Walk

A quick share from my afternoon photo walk.  It was 50 degrees with no wind today so I decided to take advantage and get outside.  I took along my Nikon d80 and my Canon AE1 so I could finish off a roll of film.  I am quite excited to get the film developed and see the results.  I also snapped a few images with my iPhone and the Shakeit Photo app which you can see here.  I actually forgot to take off my heart bokeh filter so I was surprised to find this image on my camera.  I so love the light in this image and the resulting serene feeling.  The light this afternoon was perfect and I might head out to the lake tomorrow around the same time to see if I can capture some more images.
