These two are some of my favorite people on the planet. When we were deciding where to shoot their engagement photos downtown Lawrence was our first choice.
Mike and Diana live near downtown and have worked and played their for many years. We began in South Park and stopped at a few places along the way. Some were planned, break at the Red Lyon for a quick beer, and some were discovered along the way.
I was especially excited to find a new spot near Bon Bon and the new Lawrence Arts District that has so many possibilities for cool photos.
It was a really fun evening and I can’t wait for their wedding!
I had the pleasure of shooting these lovelies last week. Their bond is so sweet and loving. We giggled, smiled, twirled in tutu’s and had a really fun afternoon shooting. Memories to be treasured for a lifetime ❤
Some quick photos shot with the Lensbaby Velvet 56 using the macro function. This lens is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Although it is a little tough to focus, especially at f1.8, it creates such dreamy photos that it’s worth it to me to spend some time getting the perfect focus. I edited these images with AlienSkin Exposure 7 using the Fuji 100 film preset. I like how the images have a vintage film look.
I got an early birthday present yesterday! A lovely new Lensbaby Velvet 56. It is such an elegant lens. The build quality is solid and the focus ring is so smooth. I just couldn’t wait to shoot with it! Today, after lunch with friends, I ventured out around downtown Lawrence to try it out. I found so many flowers, my fave, and just had a blast shooting with this lens on my D800. I shot on my Mobi EyeFi card so I could transfer the images to my iPad to edit with VSCOcam. Love the result. I can’t wait to shoot some portraits next week with my senior model.
Sara came into the studio and we played dress up with the crinolines, tulle and neck pieces I have been working on. So many combinations! She was a natural in front of the camera. We shot in a few different outfits but I wanted to play with these immediately. I edited these photos on my iPad using the RePix and VSCOcam apps. Fun to play around with adding a bit of texture and painterly effects to the work. I will share more from this shoot soon ❤️
I am not the best gardener on the planet, however, I am the Tulip master. Today I wanted to make some abstract images from my garden. Off I went with my Lensbaby mobile lens, LM-10, and my iPhone 6 and took some shots. I am really loving this lens lately. When I first shot with it I was not impressed. It sat untouched in my bag for a few months. About a month ago I started using it again and something clicked. I figured out how to use the blur and embrace the depth of field. Experimenting with this lens has really made me slow down and be more aware of composition. A really good lesson indeed.
I wanted to practice shooting into the back light in my new studio. Alas, I did not have a model. What I did have was Mr. Bear and he was a willing model. He even put on a tutu❤️
I have tried this technique a few times with very poor results. I shoot in aperture priority on my D800 90% of the time, no judgement please, it’s how I shoot. When I do shoot in manual, while using my Lensbaby, I get good results. For these shots I used the Pocket Light Meter app. It worked like a charm! The app uses live view so you can change the focus point and the settings change on the fly. Very cool. I now know I can shoot beautiful back lit images with ease. Happy days❤️
I went to visit our lovely new Lawrence Public Library today. What an amazing space for our community! In November of 2010 the citizens of Lawrence voted for a $19 million expansion to the current library. We love to read in LFK. The space is designed to accommodate a variety of community activities and acts as a central meeting place. There’s the “Teen Zone” a teen activity room with video game consoles and crafts, a children’s reading room, a large auditorium for lectures, community computers, self checkout kiosks and of course books. Lot’s of books. There is also an amazing glass sculpture that hangs above the grand staircase by artist Dierk Van Keppel. I love that my fellow Lawrencians understood the need to fund this project and in return the received an amazing space for the community. Awesome!
I had a photo shoot this morning at Gage Park in Topeka. Of course I had to stop by the Reinisch Rose Garden for some photos. I have attended many weddings there and have some fond memories of this beautiful garden. It was a truly enjoyable experience to wander around, take some photos and breathe in all the amazing scents. A lovely morning indeed. I will share the photos from the shoot early next week. Have a lovely weekend!
Super fun Saturday morning hanging out with the Quenette family, shooting photos and giggling. Are you dying over those curly blond locks yet? South Park is one of my favorite places to shoot portraits. I have done many sessions there and it always amazes me how different the park is on any given day. Although there weren’t any Spring flowers yet, I love the lush green of newly sprouted Spring trees and grass. And even though this is Jayhawk country, I will say “Go Bison!”
